Description

Insulin Pump Education is an educational course designed to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively use insulin pump therapy. The course covers the principles of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII), pump set-up and operation, troubleshooting, and the clinical management of patients using insulin pumps. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, individualised diabetes care, and promoting optimal glycaemic control through evidence-based practice.

Course Aim
The aim of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge, confidence, and practical competence to safely initiate, manage, and support insulin pump therapy in clinical practice or self-management, in order to improve diabetes outcomes and patient quality of life.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
    1. Explain the principles of insulin pump therapy and how it differs from multiple daily injections (MDI).
    2. Identify suitable candidates for insulin pump therapy and understand contraindications and precautions.
    3. Demonstrate correct set-up, programming, and operation of an insulin pump.
    4. Educate patients on basal rates, bolus dosing, carbohydrate counting, and insulin sensitivity factors.
    5. Recognise and manage common insulin pump issues, including occlusions, infusion set failures, and hyperglycaemia.
    6. Identify early signs of hypoglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in pump users and outline appropriate management.
    7. Provide patient education on sick-day management, pump troubleshooting, and emergency back-up plans.
    8. Promote safe, patient-centred care and adherence to local clinical guidelines and hospital policies related to insulin pump use.
