Description
On June 2023 HIQA identified guidance to meet thematic programme regarding restrictive practices with facilities in care of the older person. The guide provides the right to live as independently as possible without unnecessary restriction. This can be achieved by providers and staff taking a positive and proactive approach in reducing and eliminating restrictive practices. In light of the new thematic inspection occurring from June 2023 and requests to support staff this programme will enhance knowledge and support the organisation in meeting best practice from June 2023 guidance framework.
At the end of this programme participants will be able to:
? Describe physical, psychosocial, chemical and social, civil restriction and application with the facility.
? Be knowledgeable of the national restrictive practice standards.
? Adopt a questioning attitude for what may be considered restrictive practice within their work environment.
? To identify and utilise alternative strategies before consideration of the use of restrictive practices.
? Understand the collaborative assessment process and decision-making process when considering the use of restrictive practices.
? Ensure least restrictive method is used, for the shortest possible time for all residents.
? Consider legal implications for the use of time limited restrictive practices.
? Be knowledgeable on the use of emergency restrictive practices.
? Provide a framework for effective debriefing to take place as necessary.
? Be knowledgably on effective documentation with the use of restrictive practices in line with HIQA (2023)
? Identify an Action plan for your area.
