This online programme outlines information specific to the care and support of residents and their families in end of life care. The course aims to recognise signs and symptoms of deterioration, and will assess, monitor and review, physical, psychological, social and spiritual areas of care at end of life for the person. Participants will be able to Identify and apply effective interpersonal communication with families of a loved one at end of life during this difficult period. Furthermore the outline of debriefing of staff and bereavement care for residents and relatives is addressed.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of this virtual classroom programme participants will be able to:
- Understand the pivotal role in providing holistic and individualised end of life care within their own care setting by recognising, assessing, monitoring and implementing strategies for caring of a residents/ Patients physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual wellbeing at end of life.
- Identify and apply principles of sensitive communication skills and effective interpersonal communication with a resident/Patient/families at end of life.
- Anticipate and diagnose the dying phase more confidently, and initiate a plan of care to meet the resident needs and his/her family needs at the end of life.
- Recognise and assess symptom management that can be experienced at the end of life such as pain, nausea, vomiting, breathlessness, delirium, and constipation.
- Identify and apply frameworks regarding anticipatory prescribing in conjunction with the medical team- awareness of national resources in this area reviewed and outlined.
- Recognise, assess, monitor and implement strategies for caring of a residents/ Patients physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual wellbeing at end of life.
- Understand Self-care for Staff in caring for a resident/patient at of life and understand principles of debriefing and review.
