Description

This is a one day education programme  outlines the principles of risk management and how to apply these to residential care settings. The workshop encompasses requirements and guidance from the Health Information and Quality Authority as well as the ISO  Australian / New Zealand international standard for risk management.

Both the national regulations and quality standards for residential care settings for older people stress risk management structures and practices as a requirement for all of these settings. Additionally, the Commission on Patient Safety (2008) stress that principles of best practice in Risk Management should be applied to all healthcare settings. On an international basis, international collaboration for promoting risk management and patient safety has resulted in the World Patient Safety Alliance, of which HIQA is a member. HIQA (2013) emphasise the importance of effective and person centred approaches to risk management in centres for older people. All of the above developments impact on the delivery of care to residents as well as those providing that care. Currently, as identified from inspection reports, there is a need for training in this area, specifically to ensure that risk management encompasses the need to choose the least restrictive approach for the lives of residents in the centre, (HIQA, 2019).
