Description

Ireland has an ageing population.  Already, there are almost one million people aged 60 years or older living in the country, by 2041 it is expected that the number of people aged over 85 will have quadrupled. This group can be particularly vulnerable due to frequent hospital admissions, a dysfunctional immune system, physiological and anatomical changes increased incidence of acquired chronic life limiting conditions with epidemiological changes in disease acquisition.  This course is aimed at all registered nurses and will address these care needs of the older person across a variety of care settings and will examine presentation of illness in the older person, the aging process and changes in cognitive behaviour and socio/psychological issues experienced by the older person and their care givers.
