Description

This is a one-day education programme that outlines the requirements of the national policy, national standards and professional requirements for the use of restraint. Against this backdrop, the workshop outlines the decision-making process for consideration of the use of restraint as a therapeutic intervention for individual residents.

Department of Health (2011) document on restraint in nursing homes emphasises a national policy of promoting restraint free care for older people. This is echoed in other national standards, regulations and policies governing residential care settings for older people. There is no definitive list of restraints and there can be confusion as to what constitutes restraint. This course encourages participants to critically appraise every situation where an intervention is being considered, which, either by intention or effect may limit or remove a resident’s freedom. It promotes the use of a person-centred approach to assessment and care planning when making decisions regarding the use of restraint and utilises the provider guidance from HIQA (2016) on restrictive practices. While best practice advocates the use of alternatives to restraint, some of these have inherent risks and would not be suitable for all situations or all residents (NPSA, 2011 Safety Alert on the Use of Ultra low beds and crash mattresses). The course explores the use of alternatives, but again encourages participants to take a person centred rather than blanket approach to the use of appropriate alternatives.
