The aim of this course is to provide guidance to the registered nurse and midwife in the skill of peripheral intravenous cannulation. The course will discuss the nurse’s and midwife’s accountability in undertaking this role. Instruction will be provided on the sites used for peripheral intravenous cannulation, identifying criteria for evaluating a vein, and guidance will be given on adhering to the principles of an aseptic technique. The course will also provide information on techniques for reassuring the individual in relation to the procedure and in gaining their consent. The overall aim is for participants to be able to carry out the procedure in a competent and safe manner.
This course will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake peripheral intravenous cannulation; however, it will be necessary for each nurse and midwife attending to ensure that they abide by their local policy on peripheral intravenous cannulation in their place of work.
